On May 14th, 2003, just four days after I first arrived here in Bangladesh, I had the honor to present my credential at Bangabahaban to the honorable President, Professor Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed. It was a simple yet impressive and solemn ceremony that the head of Bangladesh officially received me as Ambassador of Japan. In a very amicable and warm conversation that followed, the President, looking back on his 40 long years of teaching at home and abroad, said that he had seen so many Bangladeshi students receive Monbusho Scholarship to follow higher education in Japan. The President also pointed out that many of the professors teaching younger generation of students at universities here in Dhaka were such alumni of Japanese Universities. It was very encouraging to hear from the President his very warm feelings towards our bilateral relations in general, and his appreciation of active and positive role the alumni of Japanese universalities are playing in Bangladesh in particular. Each year, over a hundred Bangladeshi students receive Monbusho-kagakusho scholarships to acquire higher education in Japan. The Japanese Development Scholarship (JDS) program, in addition, has been offering young Bangladeshi people with an opportunity to study at universities and higher institutions in Japan since 2001. More that twenty Bangladeshi researchers, young government officials, business people and other receive grant from the Japanese government each year to study in Japan for two years under the JDS program. As many as two thousand Bangladeshi students have so far studied in Japan in a variety of fields. We highly appreciate the guidance and assistance the JUAAB members have been providing to the aspiring Bangladeshi students interested to pursue higher education in Japan. We also welcome the memorandum of agreement between JUAAB and Bangladesh AOTS Alumni Society (BAAS) signed on May 3rd, 2003, pledging to achieve to common goal of promoting mutual understanding and friendship between peoples of Japan and Bangladesh. Since the very first
day we arrived for the first time here in Dhaka, my wife and I are constantly
impressed by the genuine friendship and warm feeling of people of Bangladesh
toward Japan and the Japanese people. I know we owe much to those who
dedicated their time and energy to forging and fostering such bonds of
friendship and amity between the people of Japan and Bangladesh. I wish
to follow the footsteps of my able predecessors and to start where they
left off and pledge to build greater bonds of partnership and cooperation
between the two countries in the years to come.
